The first single from On The Border, “Already Gone” spent only three weeks in the Top 40 (two months after it was released) and peaked at Number 32.
“Already Gone” was notable as the last Eagles rock-and-roll hit until three years later, when “Life In The Fast Lane” speeded to the top of the charts in 1977.
Surprisingly, it was the group’s first single to be recorded in its native California. The first two Eagles albums were recorded entirely in London.
Don Felder’s guitar overdub on “Already Gone” was the first thing he ever did as a member of the Eagles.
Felder, a Gainesville, Florida native, had a high school band, the Continentals, which included Stephen Stills. Stills was later replaced by future Eagle Bernie Leadon. Felder also gave guitar lessons to the young Tom Petty.
